The Commentator invites all its readers to join us in wishing the State of Israel a very happy 63rd birthday. We have to admit that President Obama beat us to it. On the other hand, we really mean it!

Israel is a bastion of civilisational strength in a region still dominated by primitive bigotry and medieval prejudice. Of course, we hope that the recent turmoil in the Middle East leads to a flowering of freedom and democracy. But the litmus test will be the way they respond to the State of Israel and the Jewish people generally.

When you think about it, that says a lot. How would you like to be someone else's "litmus test"? And what does it really say about the peoples of the Middle East that we're all waiting with bated breath to see whether they can behave decently towards the Jews?

And so, as we celebrate and applaud on this glorious day for the Jewish people, we are nonetheless mindful of the dangers that Israel confronts. We understand that Israel's battle is our battle, and that that brave and proud democracy stands on the front line of a civilisation struggle  faced by all of us.

So,once again, Happy Birthday Israel. We're with you all the way.
