John Bercow's security concerns
John Bercow cited security as the rationale behind censoring details of the Westminster "rent swap" scandal this week, but it seems security isn't always his main priority...
The Telegraph reported earlier this week that the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, was attempting to block the publication of MPs’ expenses that are believed to show that some rent their taxpayer-funded homes to each other in a new scandal dubbed "rent swapping".
Bercow was quoted by the Telegraph as saying, “The processing of the data … could involve causing unwarranted damage and distress,” in the letter to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa). “I should be grateful if you and your colleagues would reconsider such a plan.”
Details have since been released in dribs and drabs with a number of MPs "outed", but, at a stretch, one can sympathise with the desire to see specific details, i.e. addresses, remain undisclosed for said security reasons.
That said, Bercow must surely be ruing the timing of his latest purchase: a personalised number plate, quite clearly identifying the Land Rover Freelander pictured below as his. (via Mail Online)
Of course, how Bercow chooses to spend his hard-earned cash is entirely up to him.
Just a pitty that we don't have the same say over our hard-earned cash in the hands of MPs...
