The Iranian mashreghnews.ir website has reported that General Hassan Shateri has been killed in Lebanon.

Unconfirmed reports state that Shateri was killed by "mercernaries of the Zionist regime", indicating that Iranian or Lebanese sources believe the killing to be the work of the Israeli government.

According to a report by the Iranian Fars news agency, Shateri killed "somewhere outside of Iran" on February 12 by "the executioners" of Israel.

Israel has reportedly been responsible for the assassinations of other senior Iranian officials including scientists working on the Iranian nuclear programme.

Shateri led Iranian Republican Guard forces in Lebanon and oversaw Iranian-financed reconstruction projects there.

Gen. Ghasem Soleimani, the head of the Guard’s Quds Force, visited Shateri’s family to express his condolences. The Quds Force oversees external operations of the Guard throughout the world.
