Palestinian woman shot dead by PA police
Clashes between Palestinian Authority Police and residents near Hebron as heavy-handed tactics escalate
The Ma'an News Agency reports that clashes broke out overnight in the Sair village near Hebron after Palestinian Authority (PA) police accidentally shot a woman dead.
Sparks flew between residents and the PA police force, and a number of other injuries were reported in the incident. Residents reportedly hurled Molotov cocktails and stones at PA police, according to eyewitness reports. Police forces used tear gas to disperse the clashes, locals said.
Khalida Kawazba, 30, was killed when PA police opened fire at the car her allegedly wanted husband Nawwaf was driving. A security source said that police had ordered Kawazba to stop, but he instead accelerated, "forcing police to open fire."
Kawazba fled the scene, the source added.
Fatah Central Committee member Abbas Zaki was asked to intervene in the incident. Zaki described the fatal shooting as unacceptable and said an inquiry panel will be convened to investigate the incident.
"We don't accept such attacks. We will form an investigation committee and punish the suspect," he told Ma'an at the scene.
Additional PA police were called to the village to provide additional security.
