Liam Fox overtakes George Osborne in ‘future leader’ poll
Leadership poll for Conservative Home shows sharp rise in support for right-leaning former cabinet minister, Liam Fox
Former Defence Secretary Liam Fox has overtaken Chancellor George Osborne in a new future leader poll published by Conservative Home.
The survey of grassroots members put Fox on 12 percent - just 2 percentage points behind Culture Secretary Sajid Javid. The front-runner is currently London Mayor Boris Johnson on 22 percent, with Home Secretary Theresa May on 20 percent.
Paul Goodman of Conservative Home, who analysed the data said:
“Liam Fox’s monthly totals since he was entered for this question have been 3, 2, 2, 7, 9 and now 12.
"The former Defence Secretary is currently beating the drum for higher defence spending, has a clear right-wing profile, and is a very assiduous speaker at Association events nationwide. Perhaps these factors explain his progress.”
The news comes as two opinion polls showed an upward trend towards David Cameron’s Conservatives, with the party leading Ed Miliband and the Labour Party by two and three percentage points respectively.
