London Tories urge Syed Kamall MEP to launch Mayoral bid
Leading Member of the European Parliament tipped as a candidate for London as the race for the Conservative nomination for City Hall hots up
Respected Conservative MEP Syed Kamall has been tipped as a potential candidate for London Mayor, according to business publication City AM.
In an interview in this morning's newspaper, Kamall said, “One of the things I want to think about is the right team, whether it be in London, whether it be in Brussels, or whether it be in City Hall.”
“I’ll be having quite a few conversations over the next few days to think about it,” said Kamall, adding that he was hugely flattered by voices urging him to enter the mayoral race.
Kamall, a popular and straight-talking Eurosceptic has strong grassroots support from Tory activists.
Nabil Najjar, former chief of London Conservative Future said, "Syed is known across London as a sound, committed conservative and a champion for our City. His experience, both personal and political, and his popularity within the conservative movement makes him an excellent candidate for Mayor."
Green guru Zac Goldsmith and football legend Sol Campbell have already publicly declared their intentions to succeed Boris Johnson as London Mayor.
