The MP who wasn't there
Dr. Peter Hill is not surprised by Dr. Philip Lee's defection to the Liberal Democrats, today. As one of his constituents, it is exactly the sort of self-indulgent behaviour he has come to expect from the arrogant MP.
“Dr Who?” and “Dr Dolittle” are just two of the nicknames Dr Phillip Lee is known by in his local Bracknell constituency. What some will claim is a Lib-Dem gain is undoubtedly a win for the Conservative Party.
Having sat through many of Dr Lee’s self-indulgent arrogant out-of-touch speeches as a member of his local Conservative Association this latest move comes as no surprise. In the run up to the Brexit Referendum in 2016 Dr Lee refused to announce how he was going to vote until he thought he would be on the winning side. All the polls suggested that the country would vote to Remain, but of course the result turned out differently. Bracknell voted to Leave the EU by 53.9% to 46.1%.
Following the Referendum Dr Lee gradually became increasingly zealous in his anti-Brexit views, going against the views of his local Conservative Party members, his constituents, and the country. One of his common lines was that “as a Dr” the patient (the country) should know all the facts before making an informed decision about Brexit. He claimed the country was somehow uninformed. Apparently, despite the hardest fought election campaign of my lifetime, despite £9m being spent by the Government urging us to vote Remain, despite a long and concerted effort by the press, the CBI, the IMF, President Barack Obama, we still didn’t know what we were voting on. It takes a special kind of arrogance to think that despite all of that information and pro-remain propaganda, you still know better than the British people.
So what now?! Will Dr Lee vote against any type of Brexit? Probably yes! Will Dr Dolittle resign and let the people of Bracknell have an “informed consent” over which MP and Party represents them? Ha! Don’t make me laugh!
